Medical Education and Training Campus uses hologram technology to train combat medics

Alonzo Gonzales, a combat medic program emergency medical technician course instructor at the Medical Education and Training Campus at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, lectures students in Alpha Class 70-17 about different obstetrics complications  utilizing a specialized OB training manikin. The OB manikins resemble life-size pelvic cavities inside which the “fetus” can be positioned to replicate any number of complicated situations.

Former U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research commander to receive ‘Icon in Surgery’ award

Dr. Basil A. Pruitt Jr., former commander and director of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, will be presented the “Icon in Surgery” award and appointed 2nd vice president of the American College of Surgeons during the annual surgical meeting in San Diego, Calif.

New Cole High School Stadium improves game experience for players and fans

Runners of the Cole High School cross country team work out under the direction of coach Tina Guerrero (right) on the new turf at the newly renovated Cole stadium Aug. 2.  Besides the new turf, a $7.3 million renovation of the stadium added new lights, a new press box, new restrooms, a new scoreboard and new concession area.

Medical Education & Training Campus pharmacy student sets example for her children

Airman 1st Class Amanda Cervantes, a student in the Medical Education and Training Campus Pharmacy Technician program on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, Texas, conducts a mock exam to learn how to use the Composite Health Care System database. "Mock" exams test the skills that the students have learned to prepare them not only for the graded exam, but for what they will see in the clinical training phase and eventually in their permanent duty station.  Cervantes, a widow with four children, joined the Air Force Reserve to set an example for her children, serve her country, and work in the medical field so she can help people.

Army North unit leaders expand awareness of Center for the Intrepid

Leaders from Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) toured the Center for the Intrepid facility at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Aug. 10 to learn about the importance of support and care provided to wounded warriors. The facility’s capabilities include state-of-the-art technologies designed to be used for rehabilitation, research, education and training. CFI maintains the military’s readiness by providing care, treatment and training to assist service members with rehabilitation to maximize their potential and reintegrate them back to the force.

A team of U.S. Army medical personnel from Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston participated in a training exercise in Hospital Escuela and Hospital Maria in Tegucigalpa, Honduras from July 19-27, performing complex trauma surgical procedures in a resource limited environment with logistical support from Joint Task Force-Bravo.

Lapenias is one of four AMEDDC&S graduate students in the social work program who interned this summer at Haven for Hope, a 22-acre campus that helps homeless individuals and families with services to help them become independent and find a permanent home.

Army North gains new deputy commanding general

U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) welcomed Brig. Gen. Richard C. Kim and his family to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston at a welcoming ceremony held at the historic quadrangle July 27. Kim assumes responsibility as the deputy commanding general and director of operations for Army North. He most recently served as the deputy director, program analysis and evaluation, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-8, Washington, D.C. The ARNORTH DCG is the eyes and ears for the commanding general and as the director of operations, is responsibility for daily and future operations and exercises. Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan welcomed the Kims to the Fifth Army family and said Kim possess all the qualities to accomplish the Army North mission.

Vietnam-era Army medic sees son promoted; receives Silver Star

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commanding general of U.S. Army North (Fifth Army), pins the Silver Star on Edward Iannuccilli during a ceremony July 7 at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. The Silver Star had been awarded to then-Spec. 4 Iannuccilli but never presented. Iannuccilli, a combat medic in Vietnam, survived a medical evacuation crash April 7, 1970, then, disregarding the flames and exploding ammunition inside the helicopter, made several attempts before successfully rescuing the pilot. The pilot, and several other members of his unit, 159th Medical Evacuation Company, or Dustoff, attended the award ceremony, which coincided with Iannuccilli’s son, Michael, being promoted to lieutenant colonel.
