METC Technology Innovation Group showcases key initiatives, products of the future at tech expo

By Maj. Rendy Yudhistira Medical Education and Training Campus Chief Technology Officer

The Medical Education and Training Campus Technology Innovation Group, or TIG, hosted the first homegrown technology expo on the METC campus at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston June 23.

The expo included interactive displays, computer lifecycle products, briefings and best practice presentations from various group members. It was attended by instructors, program service leads and students from throughout METC, to include elements from the Defense Health Agency education and training directorate.

Created in February 2016, the TIG is a cross functional working group whose purpose is to explore innovative technology initiatives for METC. It is composed of subject matter experts from various METC departments, including the Information Management Division, Multimedia Technology, Educational/Academic Technology, Faculty/Staff/Student Development and instructors.

The expo served as a capstone event to show the METC community upcoming and potential classroom technology.

“The expo really helped bridge the gap not only between instructors and METC headquarters staff, but also among the instructors when it comes to technology,” said Sgt. 1st Class Fernando Fonseca, METC otolaryngology course instructor. “It let the instructors know that our voices are being heard and METC is fostering technology innovation and collaboration.”

The briefings and demonstrations examined some of the hottest topics in classroom technology from Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology, or SMART, interactive display boards, to interactive projectors, to opportunities for instructors to get their hands on the latest refresh computers that will be deployed this year.

“For a Friday afternoon, we had a great turnout,” said Gary Schmaltz, project manager and TIG team member. “It proved that classroom technology, community collaboration and innovation are important subjects that should continue to be emphasized.”

The TIG plans to make the METC Technology Expo an annual event. For more information on the Technology Innovation Group, visit their intranet site at https://intranet.metc.mil/sites/adm/imd/TIWG/SitePages/Home.aspx.
