The remains of Cpl. Luis Patlan Torres are brought to the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery by the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Caisson Section Jan. 13. Torres was missing in action as a prisoner of war in South Korea since 1950.

Road on U.S. base in Iraq honors former Navy SEAL doc at USAISR

A road at the logisitical support area just south of Mosul, Iraq, was named after retired navy Capt. (Dr.) Frank Butler to honor his contributions to tactical combat causualty care. Butler is chairman  of the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care and chief of prehospital trauma at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.

U.S. Army South trains for post-captivity reintegration mission

“This is my second favorite work topic to talk about,” said Dr. Gary Percival, Assistant Deputy Director of Human Factors at the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency, who addressed people attending the U.S. Army South Reintegration ROC Drill, or rehearsal of concept drill at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Jan 10. With survival, evasion, resistance, and escape, or SERE, being Percival’s first favorite work topic discussion, he gave the group some insight into the 10 different events that included about 50 returnees and approximately 12 separate families he’s been involved with since 1998. “Where do we get the process?” he asked the group. “From more than 60 years of studying people who’ve been held in captivity and how they came back.”

Buchanan, U.S. Army North commanding general at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, spoke to high school musicians selected to play as part of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Marching Band about leadership and selfless service during the band welcome dinner Jan. 2, which celebrated and recognized them for their dedication and leadership to their schools and communities. The musicians are spending the week rehearsing for the Jan. 7 game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, receiving instruction from college and high school band directors, as well as learning from Soldiers in the U.S. Army Field Band.

Fallen sailor’s memory lives on through annual toy drive

Anderson Hall was named after Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Anderson who was killed in action Dec. 4, 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. Every year, Sailors at METC organize a toy drive in Anderson's honor to collect donations for Toys for Tots.
