Balloons take flight at BAMC to honor organ donor campaign

Laura Vaughn, Brooke Army Medical Center nurse, signs up for the donor registry during BAMC’s National Hospital Organ Donation Campaign kickoff at the medical center Feb. 14. In 2016, BAMC had 17 donors, 70 organs transplanted, 30 cornea and 20 tissue donors with 100 percent referral rate and 80 percent conversion rate (converting eligible donors into actual donors).

Navy Recruiting District San Antonio recognized for retention excellence

Petty Officer 1st Class Eric Petdan, command career counselor assigned to Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, stands next to one of two gold anchors situated in front of the NRD headquarters.  Originally black, the anchors were painted gold in 2014 after the command was recognized as one of the winners of the Navy’s Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (MPT&E) Retention Excellence Award for Fiscal Year 2013.  The NRD was again awarded the honors for Fiscal Years 2015 and 2016.

Three BAMC clinics earn national recognition as Patient Centered Medical Homes

The Westover Medical Home earned the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s highest level of recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home and achieved Level 3 certification on its initial NCQA survey after opening its doors 16 months ago.

JBSA commemorates first military flight

March 2 marks the 107th anniversary of the first military aerial flight taken by Army Lt. Benjamin Foulois when he boarded the “Signal Corps ‘Aeroplane’ No. 1” and circled Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston’s MacArthur Parade Field.

Scalding injuries can happen at any age

A scalding injury can happen at any age. Particularly at risk are children, older adults and people with disabilities. Dreadful injuries can occur from hot liquids from bath water, hot coffee and even microwaved soup. The second leading cause of all burn injuries are scalding burns.

Army Emergency Relief campaign kicks off March 1

The 2017 Army Emergency Relief kick-off campaign take place at 10:30 a.m. March 1 at the U.S. Army North Quadrangle at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, with Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, ARNORTH commanding general, as guest speaker.  A reception at the Fort Sam Houston Museum will immediately follow the ceremony.

Medical miracle: BAMC surgeons perform groundbreaking arm replant

Christopher Ebner, occupational therapist, exercises Kelsey Ward’s arm Jan. 20 at the Center for the Intrepid at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. Ward’s arm was severed when a guardrail pierced the passenger-side window of her SUV in a car wreck April 20, 2016. Brooke Army Medical Center surgeons performed their first above-the-elbow arm replant on the 22-year-old trauma patient and almost 10 months later, she is thriving.

Service to country runs in Fisher family

Reginal A. Fisher Jr. (left) , a 2016 graduate of Allison Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, enlisted into the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman at the San Antonio Military Entrance Processing Station at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.  His father, Lt. Reginal A. Fisher Sr., a native of Longview, Texas, and the enlisted operations officer for Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, administered the Oath of Enlistment.  Future Sailor Fisher will become the fifth generation serviceman in his family.  His great-great grandfather, Pfc. Tinzer Morrow, served in the Army during WWI; his great grandfather, Cpl. Willie Lee Fisher, served in the Army Air Corps in WWII; his grandfather, Cpl. James Lewis Fisher, served in the Army during the Vietnam War; and his father, who served in OPERATION IQAQI FREEDOM/ENDURRING FREEDOM.

It’s a new day: young mother survives car crash, gains new perspective on care

Jeanette and Daryl Naschke play with their boys, 5-year-old Austin and 3-year-old Nolan, in the park. Jeanette Naschke was severely injured in a car accident in May 2015 and received care at Brooke Army Medical Center and the Center for the Intrepid at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. She is now able to enjoy her life with her family.
