Armed Forces River Parade highlights ties to military families, community

Military members from Joint Base San Antonio enjoy the festivities at the Arneson River Theater during the annual Armed Forces River Parade May 18 in downtown San Antonio. This year's theme was "Salute Our Heroes." The parade promotes awareness of the joint presence and ties to the military families and community. Representing the U.S. Army in this year's parade were Brig. Gen. Bill Boruff, Mission and Installation Contracting Command commanding general; MICC Command Sgt. Maj. Marcos Torres, and Capt. Jim Jimenez, aide de camp for the MICC commanding general.

360 Degree Leader program: ‘what rocks are you carrying?’

Dr. Mary Lopez, a retired Army colonel and 360° Program co-founder, engages in an exercise called “3-by-3” with Staff Sgt. Peter Tuinei-Flora, 56th Signal Battalion, during the 360° Leader Program at the Vogel Resiliency Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston May 15. The purpose of the exercise is to open good communication lines between spouses by sitting knee-to-knee and allowing one spouse to speak for three minutes without interruption.

Cost-saving travel initiative projected to save $5M annually

Egyptian officer graduates U.S. Air Force Military Training Instructor School

Egyptian Armed Forces Capt. Amer Faymy graduates from U.S. Air Force Military Training Instructor School May 9, 2019, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Faymy completed the eight-week course at the Military Training Instructor Schoolhouse and will return to his home country to instruct and lead members of the Egyptian Armed Froces.

U.S. Army South conducts multinational humanitarian assistance/disaster relief exercise in Dominican Republic

Air Force to pay up to $500 for spouse occupational license transfer during PCS

The Air Force announced the spouse relicensure reimbursement program, May 15, which would provide financial relief up to $500 to Airmen whose spouses must obtain state occupational relicensures or recertifications during a permanent change of station or assignment across state lines.

The Air Force will reimburse qualifying relicensure and recertification fees incurred during PCS/PCAs authenticated on or after Dec. 12, 2017.

METC Fitness Center opens new Parent Child Area

Feletia McLaurin, Medical Education and Training Campus Fitness Center fitness and sports manager, stands beside a mural of a tree she painted in the new Parent Child Area at the fitness that officially opens June 3. Located in a former workout room and storage space at the fitness center, the Parent Child Area has a play area and small table for children and includes a flat screen TV and DVD player for viewing children’s movies. In addition, it includes an area with new exercise equipment for parents to work out on while they watch over their children.

Know how to apply sunscreen, insect repellent correctly

When applying the bug spray, you’ll also want to ensure you apply it evenly, but don’t overapply. Shake the container and spray onto all uncovered skin and clothes (approximately 4 to 8 inches away unless label directions state otherwise.)

AFOSI seeks enlisted Airmen to join ranks

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is actively seeking enlisted Airmen in the ranks of senior airman through technical sergeant to cross-train into the 7SXXX Air Force Specialty Code and serve as AFOSI special agents.
Originally founded in 1948, AFOSI is modeled after the Federal Bureau of Investigation and investigates all felony-level crimes involving Air Force people and property.

JBSA firefighters show appreciation for wounded warriors

Joint Base San Antonio firefighters spent the morning with wounded service members at the Center for the Intrepid at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston participating in physical fitness and sports activities May 10. This is the ninth year the firefighters have organized the annual event to show their appreciation for the service and sacrifices the military members have made to our nation. After the sporting events, the firefighters prepared a barbecue lunch for the warriors and CFI
staff.

Commentary: the power of positive thought

It’s easy to become consumed with negative thoughts when life gets challenging. Just remember, “Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.” Go out, give a high-five and smile. A positive thought or action can be just what you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back in the fight.

149th Fighter Wing Gunfighters take part in Operation Coronet Bronco

The Alamo Federal Executive Board named numerous Joint Base San Antonio military and civilian members as 2019 Federal Recognition Award winners May 8 at the Schertz Civic Center. The ceremony was attended by about 300 military and civilian federal employees from across the Greater San Antonio federal government.

The AIM marketplace is open to officers and units at the same time so that officers moving into their next assignment and units seeking to fill assignments can communicate. Units can filter potential candidates by whether or not the officer expressed interest in an assignment by filtering for officers who put the assignment in their top 10 percent. Career coaches are a great resource to help officers determine realistic assignment preferences

New Army initiatives to cut cost, time for spouses to continue careers

The Army recently issued a directive to reduce the financial burden for spouses who wish to continue their professional careers after they move to a new duty station. The policy allows spouses to be reimbursed up to $500 for qualified relicensing costs that result from a permanent change of station or assignment to a different state.

Mark Massie earned the Secretary of the Army Award for Small Business Utilization for his direction of the command’s program in 2018. He is the director of small business programs for the Mission and Installation Contracting Command at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
