JBSA Natural Resource office spotlights endangered bird species

The golden-cheeked warbler is a small insectivorous – which means it feeds primarily on insects and spiders – songbird that migrates thousands of miles from El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and Mexico every March to breed and nest exclusively throughout central Texas, including Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis.

Local Junior ROTC teams excel at national competition

The John Jay Silver Eagles from Jay High School in San Antonio stand together after winning their fourth national title in five years at the National High School Drill Team Competition, May 3-5, 2019, at Daytona Beach, Florida. The competition was a three-day event where 68 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill teams from all services compete against one another for titles in more than 50 events. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John R. Evans Jr. (right), Army Cadet Command commander, presented the Silver Eagles’ trophy during the award ceremony. In total, John Jay High School took home 22 trophies from the competition.

Changes to Post-9/11 GI Bill transfers effective July 2019

The transferability option under the Post-9/11 GI Bill allows service members to transfer all or some unused benefits to their spouse or dependent children. The request to transfer unused GI Bill benefits to eligible dependents must be completed while serving as an active member of the Armed Forces. The Department of Defense determines whether or not you can transfer benefits to your family. Once the DoD approves benefits for transfer, the new beneficiaries apply for them at Veterans Affairs.

Off-duty 25th Air Force Airman responds to accident, assists injured

Daniel Pierce, combat operations mission supervisor in the 625th Operations Center, was traveling with his wife to Round Rock, Texas, when they witnessed an accident in Austin, March 2, 2019. Pierce did not hesitate to render aid and ensure the victim’s safety, which earned him thanks and praise from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services personnel and his leadership team.

Planning, preparation increases your chances of escaping a fire

Knowing proper escape procedures and being alerted in time can help people survive fires in their homes. Approximately half of the people responding to a recent survey conducted by the National Fire Protection Agency, or NFPA, said their family had a fire escape plan, however only 16 percent said they had practiced it.

BAMC Auxiliary provides grants to help support patient care

Air Force Reserve medical technicians and a Navy Reserve corpsman care for a simulated wounded patient during Operation Joint Medic May 5 at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis. The medics carried the patient by stretcher from a simulated firefight to a safer area to administer care until the patient could be evacuated by a Humvee and then onto a UH-60 Blackhawk from the Texas Army National Guard.
