Army North’s Task Force 51 provides connectivity during exercise, crisis

Matt Hopper, a telecommunications specialist with Task Force 51, U.S. Army North’s Contingency Command Post 1, changes the frequency on an auto control unit Aug. 9 inside the Sentinel vehicle at Kirkland Air Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during exercise Vigilant Guard 17-04 Aug. 3-11. The auto control unit enables operators to bridge the gap between disparate communications equipment.

Army North unit leaders expand awareness of Center for the Intrepid

Leaders from Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) toured the Center for the Intrepid facility at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Aug. 10 to learn about the importance of support and care provided to wounded warriors. The facility’s capabilities include state-of-the-art technologies designed to be used for rehabilitation, research, education and training. CFI maintains the military’s readiness by providing care, treatment and training to assist service members with rehabilitation to maximize their potential and reintegrate them back to the force.

Drinking and driving don’t mix: find a ride, stay alive

Drinking and driving can be a deadly mix, with 28 people every day in the U.S. dying in vehicle crashes caused by a drunk driver – a fatality every 51 minutes. In addition, military members are not immune to the dangers of drinking and driving as 146 active-duty personnel died in vehicle crashes worldwide in 2016, with 60 percent of those accidents alcohol related.

Col (Dr.) Joni Johnson, an expert in childhood learning for children with autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other childhood disorders, provides participants her insight into how to better understand the unique needs of exceptional family members. Johnson is a pediatrician, medical director and founder of Pediatric Partners for Attention and Learning and was a featured guest speaker during the U.S. Army 5th Recruiting Brigade, Quality of Life training event that took place at the Alamo in downtown San Antonio from July 31 to Aug 3. The training event focused on understanding the Army's Exceptional Family Member Program and learning how to help Soldiers and their families become more resilient through a strategy that provides education and techniques that help exceptional children thrive.

Department of Defense cracks down on use of drones over installations

Defenders from the 455th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron and a researcher from the Air Force Research Lab teamed up to bring a new program to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan July 13. To counter the challenges that unmanned aircraft systems pose on the battlefield, the team is training to pilot and use the drones, so enemy tactics can be replicated and used to train coalition forces on how to react to them.

Brooke Army Medical Center medical personnel help out in Honduras

A team of U.S. Army medical personnel from Brooke Army Medical Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston participated in a training exercise in Hospital Escuela and Hospital Maria in Tegucigalpa, Honduras from July 19-27, performing complex trauma surgical procedures in a resource limited environment with logistical support from Joint Task Force-Bravo.
