JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 13, 2023) – University of Texas at Austin junior Saeha Lee, of Dallas, an intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, participated in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. Gerald DeLong, Medical Service Corps (MSC), of Belvidere, Ill., former commanding officer of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, is “Piped Ashore” at the conclusion of a Change of Command Ceremony held at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre. Commanding NAMRU San Antonio since May 2021, DeLong took command during the COVID-19 pandemic with limited and or suspended research projects with less than 50 percent facilities occupancy for unit personnel. DeLong led the command out of the pandemic and into full operations while regaining the confidence of research sponsors.
