Former NASA CHAPEA mission member promoted to lieutenant commander

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Sept. 13, 2024) – Lt. Anca Selariu, a microbiologist assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander during a promotion ceremony held at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. Selariu, a Medical Service Corps officer who has been in America’s Navy for five years, recently served as the science officer on a 4-person team that took part in the NASA Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog’s (CHAPEA) first mission from June 25, 2023, to July 6, 2024. The CHAPEA missions, simulated expeditions to the surface of Mars, aim to collect critical data which will inform future human expeditions to space. The oath of office was administered by NAMRU San Antonio Executive Officer Cmdr. Nicholas Hamlin. NAMRU San Antonio is one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy under the Department of Defense (DoD) and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Md. NAMRU San Antonio increases research prescence at 2024 Military Health System Research Symposium

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – (Aug. 28, 2024) – Dr. Annette Rodriguez, of San Antonio, a research scientist, assigned to the Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, presented research on Thera-101 Secretome Influence on Angiogenesis and Bone Regeneration during Poster Session Three on day three of the 2024 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. The MHSRS brings together military, government, academia, and industry experts for four days of critical conversations and intensive idea sharing. Presenters will share their latest research findings and challenges on topics including combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine, medical simulation and information sciences, military infectious diseases, and the radiation health effects. NREIP Interns conclude research at NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 8, 2024) – Five student interns enrolled in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) presented their research to mentors, scientists and staff assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio at Willis Hall.  Cecilia Shuler, Saeha Lee, Meili Jensen, Matthew Byrne, Victoria Capobianco took part in the 10-week program which places college and university students in Department of Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research during the summer. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. NREIP gives academically talented college students, graduating seniors, and graduate students pursuing STEM careers the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. Selariu was part of a four-person crew that took part in the NASA Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog’s (CHAPEA) first mission. Selariu, a native of Romania, brought expertise in vaccines, prion transmission, gene therapy and infectious disease research to the CHAPEA mission. University of Texas student gains valuable experience through Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program

Lee, of Dallas, is one of six students participating in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP). JBSA Sailors take part in Battle of Flowers Parade

Navy Medicine tests treatment protocols in the Artic

USUHS Vice President of Research visits NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (March 27, 2024) – Stephen Guetersloh, a research scientist assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio’s Directed Energy Health Effects Directorate, speaks with Dr. Mark Kortepeter, vice president for Research, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and Tiffany Helling, USUHS Office of Research senior manager, Strategic Partnerships and New Initiatives, on electromagnetic equivalent phantoms inside a RF anechoic chamber at the Tri-Service Research Laboratory (TSRL).  Kortepeter and Helling toured the facility and received a series of briefings ranging from Expeditionary and Trauma Medicine to Cellular and Immune Based Adjuncts.  In addition to his duties at USUHS, Kortepeter serves as the co-chair for the Indo-Pacific Research Alliance for Military Medicine (IPRAMM).
