Commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific visits NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (March 25, 2024) – Rear Adm. Guido Valdes, commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific (NMFP), held a townhall meeting at the Military and Family Readiness Center during his official visit to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio. Valdes, who serves as the Chief of Navy Medical Corps, has oversight of 10 Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Commands on the West Coast and Pacific Rim as well as Navy Medicine's eight global research labs. Valdes also serves under the Defense Health Agency (DHA) as the director of the Defense Health Network Pacific Rim where he oversees the delivery and integration of healthcare at nine medical treatment facilities (MTF) on the West Coast and Pacific Rim. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. Commanding Officer, NAMRU San Antonio welcomes America’s newest citizens

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (March 27, 2024) – Capt. Jennifer Buechel, commanding officer, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, joined by Immigration Service Officer Yoli Fleming, with 15 service members from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force who became U.S. citizens from the countries of China, Kenya, Jamaica, Nigeria, Vietnam, Venezuela, and The Philippines during a U.S. Citizenship Naturalization Oath Ceremony held at the Military and Family Readiness Center. Buechel, of Woodhaven, Mich., and a Navy nurse, delivered the keynote address. BUMED Medical Inspector General evaluates NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (March 6, 2024) – Program managers assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio attend the outbrief of the U.S. Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) Medical Inspector General, Capt. William Deniston at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. Approximately 12 inspectors conducted evaluations of 40 programs and collateral duties over three days at Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio to improve command performance and processes. Jones spoke on numerous topics including the National Defense Authorization Act, the recent Deputy Secretary of Defense Memorandum, and the research and development relationship with the Defense Health Agency. Rachel Robeck, of Atlanta, a Navy Emergency Medicine physician assistant assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, was recognized as a Hero of Military Medicine honoree during the 2023 Heroes of Military Medicine San Antonio Awards Program held at The Red Berry Estate. Presenting the award was retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Caravalho, president and CEO of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc., joined by NAMRU Commanding Officer Capt. Jennifer Buechel. The awards program, hosted by the HJF, recognized exception community leaders who advance military medicine in and around the greater San Antonio area. The event brought the story of Military City USA’s unique military and civilian medical research and clinical care collaborations to national and global attention. KISSIMMEE, Fla. – (Aug. 15, 2023) – Dr. Amer Tiba, a research scientist, assigned to Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, briefs his research titled “Formulation of a Novel Self-healing Dental Resin and Testing its Performance” to NAMRU San Antonio leadership during a poster session held on day two of the 2023 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. The MHSRS brings together military, government, academia, and industry experts for four days of critical conversations and intensive idea sharing. Presenters will share their latest research findings and challenges on topics including combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine, medical simulation and information sciences, military infectious diseases, and the radiation health effects. JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 9, 2023) – Pennsylvania State University sophomore William Hervey, of San Antonio, an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio’s Biomedical Systems Engineering and Evaluation Department, with his parents and siblings after presenting his research titled “Development of a Trauma Manikin for Test and Evaluation in Extreme Cold Environments” to researchers and NAMRU San Antonio leadership at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy asset that is dedicated to enabling critical scientific, research, and health initiatives of the department and its laboratory system by providing world class expertise in STEM workforce development, scientific and technical reviews, and the evaluation of radiation exposure and environmental contamination. Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program interns present research at NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 13, 2023) – University of Texas at Austin junior Saeha Lee, of Dallas, an intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, participated in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. NREIP gives academically talented college students, graduating seniors, and graduate students pursuing STEM careers the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. NAMRU San Antonio welcomes new commanding officer

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 4, 2023) – Capt. Gerald DeLong, Medical Service Corps (MSC), of Belvidere, Ill., former commanding officer of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, is “Piped Ashore” at the conclusion of a Change of Command Ceremony held at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre. Commanding NAMRU San Antonio since May 2021, DeLong took command during the COVID-19 pandemic with limited and or suspended research projects with less than 50 percent facilities occupancy for unit personnel.  DeLong led the command out of the pandemic and into full operations while regaining the confidence of research sponsors. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
