JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
On Jan. 27, 2020, Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, 39th Surgeon General of the Navy, approved a decision to unify Navy Medicine branding across the enterprise. This initiative developed a consistent “One Navy Medicine” brand utilizing nested logos to complement and support Navy Medicine’s organizational structure.
To adhere to the direction of the Surgeon General, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio has published its newest command logo.
The octagon represents the eight-subordinate research and development commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Command in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The elements outside of the octagon are consistent with Navy Medicine branding with all elements of the logo, from the colors to the symbols, selected to reinforce and strengthen the Navy Medicine identity.
Inside the octagon are unique NAMRU San Antonio command-specific identifiers. The green border represents Army personnel assigned to the command who are critical to the success of the command’s mission. The white star, and red, white and blue colors represent the state of Texas. The microscope represents the command’s research mission and the likeness of the Alamo represents the city of San Antonio.
According to Commanding Officer Capt. Gerald T. DeLong, NAMRU San Antonio has enjoyed four previous logos in the history of the Command.
“The timing of the new logo release coincides with emerging research initiatives at NAMRU San Antonio and will serve us well going into the future,” said DeLong. “It was a team effort from all command personnel who voted on the elements within the octagon.”
NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap-driven combat casualty care, craniofacial and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
The Command was initially activated as Naval Medical Research Institute Detachment at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, in 1994. In 1988, the detachment was reorganized as Naval Health Research Center Detachment. It was again reorganized in 2009 as part of Base Realignment and Closure Initiatives becoming NAMRU San Antonio located at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
