JBSA dedicates new technology career training program for military spouses

Joint Base San Antonio officials and representatives from Microsoft marked the start of a new technology career training program geared towards military spouses known as the Microsoft Military Spouse Technology Academy at a ribbon cutting at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Military & Family Readiness Center Sept. 27. Cutting the ribbon are (from left) Danny Chung, Microsoft military affairs chief of staff; Col. Peter Velesky, JBSA and 502nd Air Base Wing deputy commander; retired Maj. Gen. Chris Cortez, Microsoft vice president of military affairs; and Elizabeth O’Brien, U.S. Chamber of Commerce senior director of Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Program.

Solemn dance highlights American Indian Heritage Day

San Antonio Sailors honor submarine vet’s life

Navy Recruiting District San Antonio Sailors carry the casket for Petty Officer 3rd Class Mark Lyle Walker, a sonar technician (submarine), in Killeen, Texas, Sept. 26 . Walker, a submarine veteran, had no family or next of kin, prompting the Navy Medicine Education, Training and Logistics Command, Navy Medicine Training Support Center and NRD-SA Sailors to make the two-hour drive from Joint Base San Antonio to honor Walker's Navy service.

‘Shot in the arm’ a good thing with onset of flu season

With flu season quickly approaching, health care professionals throughout JBSA are encouraging beneficiaries to receive their flu shots once the vaccines are available. The flu is spread throughout the year, but is most common during the fall and winter months. Influenza activity typically begins to increase in October and November, peaking during the winter months and continuing as late as May.

Fire Department Open House highlights prevention week

Maj. Gen. David P. Glaser, U.S. Army North Deputy Commanding General-Operations, presented the Soldier’s Medal to Sgt. James Miller, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, at Fort Sam Houston Sept. 24. Miller was recognized with the Soldier’s Medal for selflessly pulling a woman from a burning vehicle in May 2017. Maj. Gen. Glaser was the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command Commander when the award started processing and was honored to present the medal.
