Xavier Ferguson receives a $5,000 U.S. Savings Bond from Julie Cosby, San Antonio general manager of the Army and Air Exchange Service, as a winner in the AAFES "You Made the Grade" program. He is the son of Tech. Sgt. Craig Ferguson, Cryptologic Systems Group. The program recognizes Lackland Air Force Base students for academic achievement. Students receive coupon booklets which include free admission to a movie and other treats. Each booklet contains a form for a quarterly drawing for a $2,000, $3,000 or $5,000 savings bond. Cutting income taxes

Brig. Gen. Darrell Jones uses a giant pair of scissors to cut a ribbon to dedicate the new Lackland Air Force Base Tax Center in the Carswell Administration Building, Bldg. 9050, Suite 3700. Standing beside General Jones, then the 37th Training Wing commander, is 1st Lt. Eric Adams, officer in charge of the center. The center will open Feb. 5, 2007. The building, at 1700 Carswell Ave., is near clothing sales on Hughes Avenue at Kirtland Street. Hours of operation will be 8-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Appointments are required for all but basic military trainees and technical school students by calling 671-7983 starting Monday. Also, each unit has at least one tax advisor ready to assist with federal income tax returns.

Icy weather workers

Guadalupe Montana, a 37th Civil Engineer Squadron exterior foreman, stretches from a lift bucket to cut an ice-laden tree limb responsible for a two-hour power outage starting around 10 a.m. Jan. 17 on the southern training side of Lackland Air Force Base,Texas. Mr. Montana said the limb, near Bldg. 5570 on Selfridge Avenue between Hughes and Walker Avenues, pushed a primary power line into another line, causing a "big ball of fire" before the short tripped a circuit breaker.
