Be part of history: Name Randolph's new air park

By Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Del Vecchio 12th Flying Training Wing Public Affairs

Randolph members have the chance to become part of the base's history by naming the new park which is being built in the old Wherry housing area.

The contest starts today for all of Team Randolph, in search of a name that encompasses the feeling of history and heritage that will be prevalent in the park.

"We will open the doors for submissions for one month and the name selected will be entrenched in the wall on the park's entrance," said Lt Col Vincent Feck, Mission Support Group deputy commander.

In addition to submitting a name, entrants are required to include their rationale on their proposed name for the park, said Colonel Feck.

The park's advisory committee will pick the name from the entries submitted. The advisory committee is chaired by the vice wing commander and is composed of senior leadership from each of the wing's groups. The committee will be provided counsel by personnel composed of public affairs, civil engineering, legal, senior enlisted advisor and the wing historian.

The author of the chosen entry will not only be honored with a permanent staple of their tour here, but will also be invited to lunch with Col. Richard Clark, 12th Flying Training Wing commander, and their name will be placed in a time capsule along with other historical items inside the ball on top of the park flagpole.

"This is a perfect opportunity for a Team Randolph person to leave their mark on this prestigious base's history," Colonel Clark said. "I am looking forward to the entries that will be submitted."

The nine-acre park will include a pavilion and a half-mile walking path. Additionally, the new park will feature a collection of aircraft models representing various aircraft which were stationed here in the past.

Although the park will be a great place to enjoy nature and the weather, it will be a place for visitors and permanent parties to learn about and honor the rich heritage of the base.
Members interested in submitting a name should e-mail their entry to wingspread@randolph.af.mil. All entries will be judged at the park committee meeting in Feb. and announced on the base Web site at www.randolph.af.mil.
