JBSA dedicates new technology career training program for military spouses

Joint Base San Antonio officials and representatives from Microsoft marked the start of a new technology career training program geared towards military spouses known as the Microsoft Military Spouse Technology Academy at a ribbon cutting at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Military & Family Readiness Center Sept. 27. Cutting the ribbon are (from left) Danny Chung, Microsoft military affairs chief of staff; Col. Peter Velesky, JBSA and 502nd Air Base Wing deputy commander; retired Maj. Gen. Chris Cortez, Microsoft vice president of military affairs; and Elizabeth O’Brien, U.S. Chamber of Commerce senior director of Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Program.

Fowl or foul, filthy food affects thousands

In observance of Food Safety Education Month in September, the Defense Commissary Agency joins the CDC, the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Food Safety Inspection Service, the Department of Health and Human Services and other organizations to help prevent foodborne illnesses by increasing awareness of improperly handling food items.

JBSA leaders sign proclamation observing Suicide Prevention Month

Joint Base San Antonio leaders pledged to support programs and initiatives to reduce suicide among service members and their families, retirees, veterans and Department of Defense civilians at a proclamation signing ceremony in observance of Suicide Prevention Month held at the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Military & Family Readiness Center Sept. 3. Signing the proclamation were (from left) Lt. Col. Chad Humphrey, U.S. Marine Corps officer in charge, Wounded Warrior Battalion East, Detachment San Antonio; Brig. Gen. Laura L. Lenderman, 502nd Air Base Wing and JBSA commander; Rear Adm. Tina Davidson, Navy Medicine Education, Training and Logistics Command commander; Lt. Gen. Laura Richardson, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) commander; and Cmdr. Libby Rasmussen, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, Joint Task Force-West.

JBSA activities this month draw attention to suicide issue

Runs for Life and Resiliency Fairs are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 21 at JBSA-Randolph’s Heritage Park and 9-11 a.m. Sept. 28 at JBSA-Lackland’s Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center. JBSA leaders discuss mold remediation in dorms, way forward
August 2, 2019
Members of the 502nd Civil Engineering Group remove carpet from a dorm room impacted by mold August 1, 2019, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. After an assessment, remediation steps include ensuring heating, ventilation and air conditions systems are properly working, as well as installing dehumidifiers, exhaust and ceiling fans. Heart of the Air Force beats strong with Unite

The 502nd Air Base Wing’s command section enjoy lunch during their resiliency day at Canyon Lake June 11, 2019. For the 502nd ABW command staff function, the UNITE program provided funding for the food, $5 per member.

Local chamber members learn of JBSA growth, future plans

Brig. Gen. Laura L. Lenderman, commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio hosted 16 members of local Chambers of Commerce from cities located near JBSA installations during its first chamber summit at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston on June 4. Chamber members were told about of the future growth of JBSA, to include more than 800 new people this year and how this will affect JBSA and the surrounding communities. This growth will mean new challenges, but also new opportunities, ranging from infrastructure to community initiatives.

Armed Forces River Parade highlights ties to military families, community

Military members from Joint Base San Antonio enjoy the festivities at the Arneson River Theater during the annual Armed Forces River Parade May 18 in downtown San Antonio. This year's theme was "Salute Our Heroes." The parade promotes awareness of the joint presence and ties to the military families and community. Representing the U.S. Army in this year's parade were Brig. Gen. Bill Boruff, Mission and Installation Contracting Command commanding general; MICC Command Sgt. Maj. Marcos Torres, and Capt. Jim Jimenez, aide de camp for the MICC commanding general.

Alamo Federal Executive Board names 2019 Federal Recognition Award winners

The Alamo Federal Executive Board named numerous Joint Base San Antonio military and civilian members as 2019 Federal Recognition Award winners May 8 at the Schertz Civic Center. The ceremony was attended by about 300 military and civilian federal employees from across the Greater San Antonio federal government.

JBSA-Fort Sam Houston hosts Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Summit
April 22, 2019
Senior service commanders from throughout Joint Base San Antonio signed the Commanders' Proclamation during the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Summit at the Fort Sam Houston Community Center April 3. The event helped command teams across JBSA and the Sexual Assault first responders to gain a better understanding of sexual assault trends and gain knowledge from subject matter experts. By signing the proclamation, the leaders across JBSA commit to work together to educate our community about supporting survivors and standing against harmful attitudes and actions, and not be bystanders.

‘Take Back Our City’ event targets sexual violence

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, Army North (Fifth Army) commanding general, provides the keynote address at the "Take Back Our City/Night" event at San Antonio College April 11. He stressed the importance of partnerships between the military and universities to help end to sexual violence. The event was part of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month at Joint Base San Antonio.

JBSA recognizes volunteers who go beyond the call of service for military community

An oversized check, representing the monetary value in hours given by volunteers to JBSA calculated by last year, was presented to JBSA leaders. JBSA members had volunteered a total of 342,396 hours in 2018, which came out to a monetary value of $8.4 million.

Joint Base San Antonio greets schoolchildren for ‘Purple Up! For Military Kids’ day

Joint Base San Antonio leaders, service members, teachers and school administrators greeted Fort Sam Houston Elementary School students before classes for “Purple Up! For Military Kids” day April 12. JBSA and San Antonio community members were encouraged to wear purple to recognize military children for their personal sacrifice and courage in supporting their military parents. The children were given purple beads by service members as they made their way to school. “Purple Up! For Military Kids” day commemorated the Month of the Military Child in April, which acknowledges the important role of military children and families worldwide in the armed forces, acknowledging the sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome on a daily basis.

To honor military members past and present, service members from across Joint Base San Antonio, as well as ROTC cadets from the University of Texas at San Antonio, presented the American flag during the National Anthem at the San Antonio Commanders football game at the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio March 31. More than 100 Service members and cadets participated in the flag-holding ceremony to open Sunday's game.
