Civil engineers: No room for environmental complacency

Corn Starch fills the air as John Esquivel (left), and Daniel Perez, 12th Flying Training Wing Maintenance Division media blast technicians, use corn starch to strip the paint from a T-38 Talon at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Sept. 20. Two materials 12th FTW shops air blast to remove paint from T-1, T-6, T-38 and F-16 aircraft are plastic and corn starch, which have been deemed environmentally safe by the Air Force. Randolph generates about 20,000 pounds of plastic and 28,500 pounds of corn starch annually that is recycled.  The excess plastic is shipped to Canton, Ohio, where it is manufactured into products such as simulated marble tiles and dog bowls.

Thirty-four aircraft and 60 accompanying aircrew members were evacuated from their home station, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., in anticipation of Hurricane Isaac.
