After 20 years as a combat systems officer and more than 3,000 flying hours in a variety of aircraft, Maj. James Lee, a instructor combat systems officer with the 451st Flying Training Squadron at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., is retiring to pursue his second dream: medical school. Retired Air Force Tech. Sgt. Palacio Salazar receives the Purple Heart from retired Air Force Col. Colin Chauret Feb.15 at the Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph Taj Mahal.  Salazar was wounded in action as an Airman First Class while stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam, Aug. 21, 1965.

Soaring to Success – 94th FTS glider instructor named most active in nation

Mark Matticola, a civilian soaring instructor pilot assigned to the 94th Flying Training Squadron, was recognized as the most active glider instructor in the nation by the Soaring Society of America. Matticola, who is also a lieutenant colonel reservist assigned to the 70th Flying Training Squadron but attached to the 94th FTS, beat more than 400 other soaring instructors from across the country for the honor.  The 94th FTS conducts more than 15,000 training and competition glider sorties annually, focused on developing officership, leadership, and character to cadets.  (Courtesy photo)
