Foulois Firsts

The first Army aircraft made its first flight March 2, 1910, at Fort Sam Houston with Lt. Benjamin Foulois at the controls. Foulois piloted the Army's first aircraft, Signal Corps Aircraft No. 1, with his first flight lasting only 7 1/2 minutes. He made three more flights that day and on his fourth attempt, the young pilot ended up crashing the airplane.

March 2 marks the 107th anniversary of the first military aerial flight taken by Army Lt. Benjamin Foulois when he boarded the “Signal Corps ‘Aeroplane’ No. 1” and circled Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston’s MacArthur Parade Field.

JBSA partners with community for emergency preparedness

Members of the Somerset Volunteer Fire Department move a simulated crash victim from the vicinity of downed aircraft during a joint major accident response exercise Feb. 22 in Atascosa County, Texas. The exercise was a joint undertaking between the 502nd Air Base Wing Inspector General office, Bexar County Emergency Management Office, the Atascosa County Emergency Medial Services and the Somerset Volunteer Firefighters Department to practice emergency response procedures in the event of an aircraft crash.

New 144 PN dormitory complex offers Airmen better quality of life

The 502nd Civil Engineering Squadron conducted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for a 144 person dormitory at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Feb. 21. The $18 million dollar facility opened after a 30 month construction in September 2016 when active duty Airmen of the 24th and 25th Air Forces and the 502 Air Base Wing began moving in.
