Vigilant Guard exercise in Georgia prepares Soldiers to respond to natural disaster
March 31, 2017 — Americans who live along the eastern coastline are no strangers to the devastation caused by hurricanes and tropical storms. In the wake of that disaster, first responders, state and federal agencies pool resources to bring aid to those effected by the natural disaster. Those called to render aid participated in the week-long Exercise Vigilant Guard with Soldiers and civilians assigned to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston’s U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and Task Force-51 in Atlanta. ... First Latina military pilot, area aviators honored at Hall of Fame awards
March 31, 2017 — Retired Air Force lt. Col. Olga Custodio, the first Latina pilot to serve in the U.S. Air Force was honored at a First Latina military pilot, area aviators honored at the San Antonio Aviation and Aerospace Hall of Fame awards at Port San Antonio, the site of the former Kelly Field. Custodio, the daughter of a U.S. Army Sergeant, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1953. After living abroad in Taiwan, Iran and Paraguay, she applied to and was accepted at the U.S. Air Force Officers Candidate School in 1980. ... MORE

Army Environmental Command member sows seeds of gardening in youth

New combat-related devices authorized for Army decorations
March 29, 2017 — The V device worn on Army Commendation Medal and other awards, stands for “valor.” The device was authorized decades ago for wear on Army ribbons. The V device is still around, but joining the V now are two new devices: the “C” and “R” devices, where C denotes “combat” and the R means “remote.” Both are described fully in Military Personnel Message 17-095, titled “Implementation of Department of Defense Guidance for the Newly Established ‘C’ and ‘R’ Devices.” That message was published March 15. ... The first rotation of Beyond the Horizon, or BTH, exercise personnel arrived in Belize March 25. BTH is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored exercise that U.S. Army South manages. Chargé d'Affaires Adrienne Galanek, from the U.S. Embassy in Belize, spoke with incoming U.S. service members on the importance of the exercise to the continuing relationship between the U.S and Belize March 25 at Price Barracks, Belize. Following her brief, Galanek was given a tour of the BTH17 operations base and its facilities.
