JBSA Transition Alliance fosters networks, builds careers

There are many facets to finding a career after military life, while married to a military member, caring for a wounded warrior or being a dependent who has moved numerous times during a parent’s military career. All of these things can make finding training and career opportunities difficult due to the lack of relationships created through networking. The goal of the Joint Base San Antonio Workforce, Military Spouse, and Transition Alliance is to build and foster relationships between government, non-governmental agencies, Veteran and non-profit service organizations, and employers in order to locate these opportunities.

Mission Thanksgiving 2019 was declared a success, as more than 300 community members volunteered to host more than 800 Soldiers from the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Nov. 28. For many young Soldiers attending training at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, Thanksgiving was be their first major holiday away from their home and family.

NRD San Antonio spouses join America’s Navy

Brown first entered the Navy in 2013 serving four years and will be assigned to Navy Operations Support Center San Antonio. JBSA-Fort Sam Houston researchers author paper on military dental emergencies

(From left) Dr. John Simecek, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio director of craniofacial health and restorative medicine; Dr. Sylvain Cardin, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio chief science director; and Col. Tim Mitchener, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research public health dentist and oral maxillofacial injury epidemiologist, collaborated on a six-page research paper published in the July/August issue of Military Medicine. Their research paper reviewed and analyzed data from 30 previous studies, both published and unpublished, covering reported dental emergencies and oral- and cranio-maxillofacial injuries of U.S. military personnel serving in combat environments, who were deployed, serving in stabilization operations and training exercises and those in garrison.

Army releases housing survey results

At Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, 308 of the 871 distributed surveys were received, a 35.4 percent response rate across eight neighborhoods. 
JBSA-Fort Sam Houston’s residents’ overall satisfaction rate was 76.3 percent for 2019, just above the Army average of 74.6 percent. However, that reflects a decline in satisfaction from 2018 when JBSA-Fort Sam Houston scored 78.6 percent.

Special needs children ride, learn about horses at EFMP equestrian camp

Barth was one of 12 children who participated in the JBSA Exceptional Family Member Program Equestrian Camp held at the equestrian center June 25-27. The camp allowed special needs children from military families and their siblings to learn about horsemanship and to ride horses. Leading Byers on her horse is camp volunteer Antonio Nava.

Local chamber members learn of JBSA growth, future plans

Brig. Gen. Laura L. Lenderman, commander of the 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio hosted 16 members of local Chambers of Commerce from cities located near JBSA installations during its first chamber summit at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston on June 4. Chamber members were told about of the future growth of JBSA, to include more than 800 new people this year and how this will affect JBSA and the surrounding communities. This growth will mean new challenges, but also new opportunities, ranging from infrastructure to community initiatives.

This town hall provided an update for housing residents and new steps residents can utilize to help with issues in the future.
