Program creates pathway to success for departing military members

The Transition Assistance Program is available to service members at military and family readiness centers throughout the Department of Defense, which offer classes and one-on-one counseling in conjunction with the program. For Army members, the program is called Soldier for Life – TAP.

Soldiers from the 289th Quartermaster Company, 553rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, launch a convoy Nov. 5 from Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in support of U.S Northern Command. USNORTHOM is providing military support to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to secure the southern border of the United States.

JBSA civilian’s ingenuity saves the Air Force money

Thanks to Brian Spalinger, an employee at the 502nd Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, approximately 60 headlight assembly sets have been refurbished instead of replaced since May 2018, saving the Air Force an estimated $28,000. Instead of ordering new headlights assemblies that costs the Air Force approximately $418, Spalinger refurbishes the damaged headlights which not only saves the Air Force money, but it allows the vehicle to be returned to customer at a faster rate.

Bexar County designated as nonattainment for ozone

San Antonio was the last major city in Texas to attain the nonattainment status. Bexar County is being classified as “marginal” on the severity scale, and has two years to reduce air emissions and regain attainment status.Joint Base San Antonio has already been doing their part and has made great strides in combating air pollution.

Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio focuses on improving device to remove dental waste

Lt. Cmdr. Nicholas Hamlin, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio Environmental Surveillance Department head and research dentist, demonstrates how an amalgam separator is attached to a dental chair and how it works in removing amalgam waste to prevent it from going into the wastewater system. Hamlin is part of a team of NAMRU-SA researchers who are involved in a project to develop a better prototype of the amalgam separator, a cylindrical device attached to a dental chair that filters amalgam, a mixture of metals including mercury, which is used by dentists for large teeth restorations and to fill in cavities.

Parents learn strategies to fight online bullying at Vogel Resiliency Center workshop

Donnell Dawson (right), Joint Base San Antonio Family Life lead program educator, conducted and was the instructor for the “Social Media Safety and Bullying” workshop held at the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Vogel Resiliency Center July 16. The workshop focused on skills and strategies parents can utilize in protecting their children from dangers posed by social media and online bullying. Joining Dawson are two parents who attended the workshop, Geremy and James Chavez.

Gina Griffith (right), Ph.D., who just completed her first tour in the Army as a microbiologist at the USAISR and transferring to a deployable unit at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

Military Appreciation Weekend showcases military, history, community May 5-6

Military Appreciation Weekend at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston is planned for May 5-6, and will feature live music, rides, arts and crafts, military demonstration teams, historic tours and a polo match. The weekend will open with a 5K race on Saturday and conclude with a live music concert and fireworks on Sunday.
