Army North commander among leaders stressing cohesion during Hurricane Michael relief efforts

Members of the National Guard conduct search and rescue operations in North Carolina last month following Hurricane Florence. Disaster preparedness and unity of effort will be an Army priority, Army leaders said Oct. 9, 2018 during the annual AUSA meeting. With Hurricane Michael making landfall in Florida, Army leaders said they re-evaluated their response procedures after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico last year.

Army Reserve medical personnel improve readiness serving local communities

Kodjo Koukoua, an Army Reserve optical laboratory specialist assigned to 7252nd Medical Support Unit, is processing new eye prescriptions for eyeglass fabrication at Escontrias Early Childhood Center in Socorro, Texas. Koukoua is one of approximately 50 U.S. Army Reserve and U.S. Army Soldiers who are working in partnership with the Texas A&M Colonias program to provide medical care to El Paso County's underserved colonias population.

Spc. Launa Bailey, a combat medic, completes an eye screening for local residents waiting for medical services at Betty Harwell Middle School in Edinburg, Texas. Approximately 50 U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers assigned to the 7235th Medical Support Unit out of Orlando, Texas, worked in partnership with the Texas A&M Colonias program June 16-27 to provide medical care to Hidalgo County's underserved colonia population. Services provided by military personnel are done through the Department of Defense's Innovative Readiness Training, a civil-military program that builds mutually beneficial partnerships between U.S. communities and the DOD. The missions selected meet training & readiness requirements for Army Reserve service members while integrating them as a joint and whole-of-society team to serve our American citizens.

Changes to UCMJ: Military Justice Act of 2016 brings about training

Lt. Col. Sara Root, chief of the Army’s Military Justice Legislation Training Team, assigned to office of The Judge Advocate Genera -criminal law division, briefs commanders and first sergeants May 5-6 on the changes to the Uniformed Code of Military Justice inside the Roc Drill Facility at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. During the two-day course, attendees learned about the Military Justice Act of 2016, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Shown is a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Task Force power project. LOGCAP provided logistics support to the downloading of ships at the Port of Ponce in Puerto Rico. This sea port served as a debarkation point for receipt, inventory and issue of electrical materials used in the reconstruction of the electrical grid.

Army North’s Task Force-51 gains new commander

Carlana Stone (center), seen here in attendance at the Pentagon Memorial Dedication Ceremony on Sept. 11, 2008, is scheduled to speak Army Soldiers and units on Dec. 8 as part of the U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) and the Army’s Ready and Resilient program. Stone lost the use of her legs in an accident when she was 16 years old and shares her story of recuperation and triumph to motivate and empower others with their own struggles.

José Reyes, Dual Status commander; and Caguas Mayor Hon. William Miranda Torres, distributed food and water to residents of the neighborhood Borinquen, Oct. 14. Reyes, Buchanan and Marín handed over provisions to the people who were grateful for the help received and were seriously affected by Hurricane Maria.

Vernon Schmidt, a 91-year-old surviving member of the 90th Infantry Division’s from World War I, places a streamer on the 90th ID’s flag during the Fort Sam Houston’s World War I Centennial Ceremony honoring the 90th ID inside the historic Quadrangle at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The uncasing and commemoration ceremony occurred 100-years to the day that the 90th Division activated at Camp Travis, what is now Fort Sam Houston.

Army North’s Task Force 51 provides connectivity during exercise, crisis

Emergency preparedness liaison officers get ready for disaster response

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commander, U.S. Army North, gave the opening remarks to the emergency preparedness liaison officers, or EPLOs, at the annual Joint Defense Support of Civil Authorities Preparedness Workshop held May 15-19 in San Antonio. The workshop brought EPLOs together to share ideas and better prepare for disaster response. EPLOs are military officers from each of the branches of service who are responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing the Department of Defense response to requests for assistance from state, local, and tribal authorities.

Army North Task Force 51 Soldiers train at Kelly Annex

Soldiers assigned to Task Force 51, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) conduct an Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise, or EDRE training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Kelly Annex, Feb. 22-24. An EDRE is designed to exercise the movement plans of a unit to deploy to a theater of operations. All deployable units normally conduct an annual EDRE. TF-51 is Army North’s contingency command post and conducts a Defense Support of Civil Authority, or DSCA, homeland defense and theater security cooperation in order to promote the defense and security of the United States. This training better prepares TF-51 for an exercise next month in Atlanta. In that scenario, local, state, federal and Department of Defense agencies will come together to work out issues that surround hurricane disasters and relief along the eastern coastline.
