JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 9, 2023) – Pennsylvania State University sophomore William Hervey, of San Antonio, an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio’s Biomedical Systems Engineering and Evaluation Department, with his parents and siblings after presenting his research titled “Development of a Trauma Manikin for Test and Evaluation in Extreme Cold Environments” to researchers and NAMRU San Antonio leadership at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy asset that is dedicated to enabling critical scientific, research, and health initiatives of the department and its laboratory system by providing world class expertise in STEM workforce development, scientific and technical reviews, and the evaluation of radiation exposure and environmental contamination. JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (July 13, 2023) – University of Texas at Austin junior Saeha Lee, of Dallas, an intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, participated in the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. NREIP gives academically talented college students, graduating seniors, and graduate students pursuing STEM careers the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 4, 2023) – Capt. Gerald DeLong, Medical Service Corps (MSC), of Belvidere, Ill., former commanding officer of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, is “Piped Ashore” at the conclusion of a Change of Command Ceremony held at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre. Commanding NAMRU San Antonio since May 2021, DeLong took command during the COVID-19 pandemic with limited and or suspended research projects with less than 50 percent facilities occupancy for unit personnel. DeLong led the command out of the pandemic and into full operations while regaining the confidence of research sponsors.
