Joint Base San Antonio hosts German Armed Forces Badge Competition

Almost 400 Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen from Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Hood in Kileen, Texas; and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, competed in the 2018 German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge, or GAFPB, competition hosted by the collaboration of JBSA units at JBSA-Lackland, JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, JBSA-Randolph and JBSA-Camp Bullis Oct. 26-28.

NAMRU-SA project developing tools to detect harmful bacteria in wounded warfighters

Joseph Spano, Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine Directorate research engineer, works on a portable Raman spectrometer that is being utilized for a research project at NAMRU-SA focused on the development of diagnostic platforms that can better identify bacterial pathogens in wounded service members. The portable spectrometer is a user-friendly, ruggedized device that is field-deployable and capable of obtaining surface-enhanced Raman scattering, or SERS, spectra which are characteristic to individual bacterial strains. The portable Raman offers superior performance to handheld spectrometers as well as increased spatial resolution when coupled to a microscope.  The device is being used for method and platform development as well as to characterize bacteria, build representative spectral libraries and assess classification capabilities.

The U.S. Fire Administration, or USFA, estimates 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential structures occur yearly in the United States. The leading culprit in these fires is cooking. These unattended fires most commonly transpire during the afternoon hour’s noon to 4 p.m. Twenty percent of the time during Thanksgiving smoke alarms were not present or not operational in an occupied home.

BMT curriculum changes focused on inspiring, developing Airmen

A major change in body and mind is coming to the way Basic Military Training transitions civilians into Mach-21 Airmen. The changes, which start Sept. 4 and will increase the time trainees spend at BMT from 7.5 to 8.5 weeks, are being made in an effort to better develop the next generation of Airmen with an increased focus on and by modeling four lines of effort including readiness and lethality, airmanship, fitness and a warrior ethos. With readiness being one of the Air Force’s top priorities, the need to ensure Airmen are better prepared to support both the Air Force mission and that of joint combatant commanders is being addressed through a revamped expeditionary skills and weapons training curriculum.

Soldiers assigned to 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, receive briefings while deployed in support of Operation Faithful Patriot at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Nov. 1. As directed by the Department of Defense through Army headquarters, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell are deploying Soldiers, equipment and resources to assist Department of Homeland Security along the southwest border. Military personnel will provide a range of support including planning assistance, engineering support, and logistics and transportation support.
