Don't stand in line: TSA Precheck open to military, DOD civilians

All service members of all components of the armed forces and students at the armed forces' service academies are automatically enrolled in TSA Precheck. Their DOD ID numbers -- a 10-digit number that should be on the back of your Common Access Card -- serve as their Known Traveler Numbers.

UPDATE: Heating repairs to occur at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston CDC Nov. 14

JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Main CDC, Bldg 2530 heat issues continue.  Currently
seven of 12 classrooms have reached proper temperatures of 68 degrees and
will open immediately to single and dual military families first.  
If you don't fall into this priority, we ask that you please make alternate
arrangements at this time.  There is a good chance the entire center will be
reopened today, however there is no exact time as of now.

JBSA-Fort Sam Houston CDC Annex, Bldg 1720, heat has been restored and
building is heating towards proper temperatures.  Please contact the center
at 221-3835 beginning at 10 a.m. to determine what time the center will
open.

Comprised of former slaves, freed men and Black Civil War veterans, the historic Buffalo Soldiers persevered through the most difficult conditions imaginable to become some of the most elite and most decorated units in the U.S. Army.

TRICARE open enrollment gives plan choices to beneficiaries

Vice Adm. Raquel Bono, Defense Health Agency director, said the TRICARE Open Season enrollment period gives beneficiaries a choice in what they want to do with their health care coverage. Bono spoke about the new enrollment period process during a news conference in San Antonio Nov. 10.

Public turns out to honor veterans at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

Hundreds of supporters ignored chilly temperatures and rainy conditions to honor veterans of the past and present during the annual Veterans Day memorial at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Nov. 11. The event included a number of musical interludes from the Texas Children's Choir, a naturalization ceremony for eight ne U.S. citizens, readings of the service creeds and singing of the service songs. The ceremony ended with three volleys of rifle fire from the Fort Sam Houston Memorial Services Detachment and the playing of "Taps."

Veterans honored during Brooke Army Medical Center ceremony

Retired Master Sgt. Walter Taylor, a former Brooke Army Medical Center Warrior Transition Battalion Soldier, was the guest speaker during the 3rd annual Veterans Day Celebration at BAMC Nov. 2. The former combat engineer was seriously injured in Afghanistan in 2011 when he was struck in the face by a rocket-propelled grenade. As he healed, he continued to serve his fellow veterans and their families within the WTB in uniform and as a civilian.

Brooke Army Medical Center achieves ‘Most Wired’ title for seventh consecutive year

The Brooke Army Medical Center Information Management Division at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston  implemented the WHICS last October, but the system was fully employed Oct. 5 to allow alarms from patient monitors to automatically contact the appropriate personnel through the device.

JBSA Cyber Team keeps a watchful eye on security

Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston will undergo a Command Cyber Readiness Inspection, or CCRI, from Oct. 22 to Nov. 2. An inspection team from the Defense Information Systems Agency, or DISA, will conduct a thorough evaluation of all network systems for the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston area of responsibility.

Since 1970, the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has organized Celebrate America’s Military, or CAM, an annual tribute to the military. The two-week celebration during the month of November features events presented with community partners, making it the largest event of its kind nationwide.
