2023 Heroes of Military Medicine San Antonio Awards honors local Department of Defense public-private partnerships in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – (Oct. 12, 2023) – Lt. Rachel Robeck, of Atlanta, a Navy Emergency Medicine physician assistant assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, was recognized as a Hero of Military Medicine honoree during the 2023 Heroes of Military Medicine San Antonio Awards Program held at The Red Berry Estate. Presenting the award was retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Caravalho, president and CEO of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc., joined by NAMRU Commanding Officer Capt. Jennifer Buechel. The awards program, hosted by the HJF, recognized exception community leaders who advance military medicine in and around the greater San Antonio area. The event brought the story of Military City USA’s unique military and civilian medical research and clinical care collaborations to national and global attention. NAMRU San Antonio’s mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. NAMRU San Antonio hosts 6th 'Mission Possible'

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 31, 2023) – Capt. Ewell Hollis, Navy Medical Corps, of Nashville, Tenn., executive officer, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, speaks to personnel on the 101 Critical Days of Summer during the sixth edition of “Mission Possible,” an information-sharing event held at the Tri-Service Research Laboratory. The purpose of “Mission Possible” is to better inform members of the command on the tactics, techniques, and procedures of the science directorates to include the resource acquisitions and administrative directorates. ORISE intern presents research at NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 9, 2023) – Pennsylvania State University sophomore William Hervey, of San Antonio, an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio’s Biomedical Systems Engineering and Evaluation Department, with his parents and siblings after presenting his research titled “Development of a Trauma Manikin for Test and Evaluation in Extreme Cold Environments” to researchers and NAMRU San Antonio leadership at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy asset that is dedicated to enabling critical scientific, research, and health initiatives of the department and its laboratory system by providing world class expertise in STEM workforce development, scientific and technical reviews, and the evaluation of radiation exposure and environmental contamination. Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program interns present research at NAMRU San Antonio

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Aug. 2, 2023) – Cornell University senior Tristan Tran, of Long Island, N.Y., an intern assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, delivers his briefing titled “Analysis of the MDM2-p53 Relationship in 12q Amplicon-driven Osteosarcomas” to his mentor, Cmdr. Rachel Werner, NAMRU San Antonio leadership and other researchers as part of the Office of Naval Research’s Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. NREIP places college and university students in the Department of the Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for ten weeks during the summer. NREIP gives academically talented college students, graduating seniors, and graduate students pursuing STEM careers the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers. Gerald DeLong, Medical Service Corps (MSC), of Belvidere, Ill., relinquished command of Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio to Capt. Jennifer Buechel, Nurse Corps, of Woodhaven, Mich., during a Change of Command Ceremony held at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre.  Presiding over the ceremony was Capt. William Deniston, MSC, commander, Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC). Drew Havard, deputy director, Craniofacial Health and Restorative Medicine (CHRM), Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, joined by Chief Science Director Dr. Sylvain Cardin, speaks with Capt. William Brafford, commander, Naval Medical Forces Support Command (NMFSC) and Command Master Chief Veronica Brittenum regarding research on the Application of Phage Display for the Development of a Novel Antivenom against Western Cottonmouth Snakes during a tour of NAMRU San Antonio facilities at the Battlefield Health and Trauma Research Institute. SAN ANTONIO - (May 2, 2023) – Scientists and researchers assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio attended the 4th Military Medical Industry Day (MMID) hosted by VelocityTX, a subsidiary of Texas Research & Technology Foundation, the City of San Antonio, and Bexar County at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The following tri-service sessions were conducted: Blood and Shock Resuscitation/Hemorrhage and Edema Control + Organ Function Support; Combat Wound Care I (infection/sepsis: diagnosis, treatment, prevention); Combat Wound Care II (burns: assessment and treatment); Battlefield Pain Management + Traumatic Brain Injury/Polytrauma Related; Engineering, Automation, and Technology (includes Bioengineering, 3D printing); Dental/Maxillofacial Injury/Surgery Research and Development; and Military Medical Simulation/Education/Training. The MMID provides a platform for innovators and entrepreneurs to learn about military medical requirements, available funding sources to support research and development, and ways to work with the military. JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Dec. 8, 2022) – Alfredo Gonzalez, of El Paso, Texas, a financial management analyst, assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, was recognized by Commanding Officer Capt. Gerald DeLong as the Fiscal Year 2022 “Support Staff” Civilian of the Half Year (Second Half) during an All Hands meeting held at the Military and Family Readiness Center.  Gonzalez, a retired U.S. Coast Guardsman and graduate of Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, N.J., has served as a Navy civilian for five years. For Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, Sara BlackCloud, a financial management analyst, assigned to the Resource Management and Acquisitions Directorate, is a representation of the highly professional and diverse civilian workforce within the Department of the Navy.  Born in San Bernardino, Calif., and raised in San Diego, BlackCloud has been a Navy civilian for six years. She first enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2002 and enter service in the U.S. Army in 2008 deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. NAMRU San Antonio's mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DoD personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. KISSIMMEE, Fla. – (Sept. 13, 2022) – Dr. Erica Molina, of San Antonio, a research scientist assigned to Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio, briefs the Surgeon General of the Navy, Rear. Adm. Bruce L. Gillingham during a poster session held on day two of the 2022 Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) held at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center. The 2022 MHSRS brings together military, government, academia, and industry experts for four days of critical conversations and intensive idea sharing. Presenters will share their latest research findings and challenges on topics including combat casualty care, military operational medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine, medical simulation and information sciences, military infectious diseases, and the radiation health effects.
