New clinic hosts open house

Attendees of the North Center Federal Clinic Open House ceremony tour the recently-opened facility on May 17. The 30,000-square foot outpatient clinic, located at 17440 Henderson Pass Road in San Antonio, is operated jointly by the Air Force and VA. It serves both VA and Department of Defense beneficiaries. The clinic will be staffed by four VA and four Air Force providers, offering services to approximately 10,000 veterans and military family members. Active-duty military members will continue to see their established primary care manager.
Specialty care will include mental health, nutrition, optometry, pediatrics and women?s health services. The clinic will also offer on-site pharmacy, laboratory and radiology services. (USAF photo by Robbin Cresswell)

Slow down for school

Vehicles rush through school zones on and near base, putting students at risk. Depending on the area, most school speed zones require motorists to slow to 20-25 mph when the amber lights are flashing. All motorists must obey directions by the crossing guard. "Many of our children attend schools near base, such as Valley Hi Elementary, Lackland City Elementary and Rayburn Middle Schools. It is our job to do everything possible to protect them. That means slowing down to the posted speed limit and listening to the crossing guards," said Brig. Gen. Darrell Jones, a former 37th Training Wing commander. "I would rather have our people show up two minutes later because they were watching out for our kids than have one of our young students injured due to impatience and careless driving." According to the City of San Antonio Municipal Court Web site, the fine for speeding in a school zone is $202 for the first 10 miles over the speed limit and $5 for each additional mile over. Freedom from rising postage rates

The new "Forever" postage stamp is now available at the post office on Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The cost of mailing a standard letter, typically weighing in at 1 ounce, increased two cents, to 41 cents, on May 14. The Forever stamp, however, offers patrons an option to continually rising costs. The stamp is good for sending 1-ounce, first-class mail through the postal system anytime in the future, regardless of price changes. "If the price goes up again and you still have them, they're still good," assures Jessie Gonzalez from the Lackland post office.
