Vietnam traveling memorial on display at JBSA-Lackland

Ernest Ibarra of San Antonio finds the name of Airman 1st Class Edward G. Muse engraved upon the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall Tuesday at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. Muse was one of six security policemen killed in action during the Tet Offensive. Muse died Jan. 31, 1968 while defending Bien Hoa Air Base near Saigon. The base was assaulted by two North Vietnamese battalions. Although the base perimeter was breached in several places during the attack, primary defenders from the Air Force's 3rd Security Police Squadron were able to protect the heart of the base from ground attack until infantry reinforcements arrived at sun-up. Ibarra, a Purple Heart recipient, served in Vietnam as a U.S. Army specialist 4 in the infantry from 1968-1969. (U.S. Air Force photo/Alan Boedeker)

Base unveils memorial for fallen combat controller: Sather Memorial finds new home at JBSA-Lackland

Sather Jan. 20 at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Training Annex. Sather, a combat controller, was the first U.S. Air Force combat casualty during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Created by Air Force civil engineers, Sather’s memorial was displayed at Sather Air Base, near Baghdad International Airport, until its arrival here in October 2011.
