JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO –
Officials with the 502nd Air Base Wing reopened the Slagel Dining Facility on Sept. 12 at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.
The facility, which primarily serves trainees at the Medical Education Training Campus, has been partially closed since Sept. 1 to conduct scheduled repairs to the building’s plumbing. The repairs have since been completed, and the facility is once again providing its full menu to students throughout the day.
The repairs corrected a plumbing issue which resulted in a buildup of water and grease and were scheduled to be completed over the Labor Day weekend; however, discovery of extensive corrosion to the plumbing infrastructure extended the project.
Workers from the 502nd Civil Engineers Group and contractors pumped the built-up grease and water out of the facility and repaired and replaced the plumbing as required. Additionally, dining facility staff took the opportunity to accomplish extensive deep cleaning and maintenance -- work that is typically accomplished during the holidays when the student population drops significantly.
During the closure, trainees were provided with ‘to-go’ meals, prepared in advance, or ate at the Rocco Dining Facility, another dining facility on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.
