Command post, NCOIC receive AETC’s top honors

By Robert Goetz, 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Air Education and Training Command has recognized the “eyes and ears” of the 502nd Air Base Wing with two honors.

The 502nd ABW and Joint Base San Antonio Command Post at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, the organization tasked with the responsibility of keeping the base community up-to-date on emergency situations, is AETC’s 2016 Medium Unit Command Post of the Year.

Tech. Sgt. Katherine Medellin, 502nd ABW NCO in charge of training and security, was honored as AETC’s 2016 Command Post NCO of the Year.

Medellin, a 15-year Air Force veteran, called her award “an amazing honor.”

“I have an amazing team that made it possible for me to receive this honor,” she said. “I appreciate this award and, as grateful as I am for it, the greatest reward I’ve ever been given is the simple opportunity to lead by example for the Airmen in the command post.”

Medellin said her duties are varied.

“My job responsibilities include ensuring the members assigned to the command post are well-trained and equipped to maintain constant vigilance, and conducting monthly training meetings to ensure the new policies and procedures are being administered,” she said. “I also construct monthly self-study training for the controllers to stay aware of their Air Force Instructions and other orders.”

The JBSA command post is a 24/7 operation that monitors the communications of security forces and emergency responders, notifies the 502nd ABW and JBSA commander of emergency situations that arise, and alerts active-duty members and civilian employees through AtHoc, AETC’s emergency notification system.
