Conference of American Armies cycle closes, transfers to Dominican Republic

U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley and U.S. Army South Commander Maj. Gen. Mark R. Stammer take part in the vote in to induct Barbados and Jamaica into the Conference of American Armies during the commanders conference Nov. 6-9 in Washington, D.C. The conference was hosted by Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley and was attended by 20-member nations, five observer nations and three international organization members.

Army’s first Hispanic four-star general laid to rest

The casket of retired Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, the U.S. Army's first Hispanic four-star general, is transported by the Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Caisson Section during his internment ceremony Nov. 14 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas. In 1976 Mexican-American Cavazos made military history by becoming the first Hispanic to attain the rank of brigadier general in the United States Army. Less than 20 years later, the native Texan would again make history by being appointed the Army's first Hispanic four-star general. He had been retired since 1984 and died Oct. 29 after a long illness at 88.

Sutherland Springs victims, married Airmen, honored

More than 500 people attended a funeral in the Fleenor Auditorium at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph's Building 100, Taj Mahal, Nov. 9, 2017 for Senior Master Sgt. Karen Marshall and her husband Robert Scott Marshall.  The couple were killed in a shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas Nov. 5, 2017.  Karen was an Active Guard and Reserve member and Scott was a civilian employee with the 12th Flying Training Wing.

Take command: Enroll now for 2018 TRICARE coverage

Starting Jan. 1, 2018, cost changes for TRICARE benefits transition from a fiscal year period to a calendar year period. Changing from fiscal year (Oct. 1 – Sept. 30) to calendar year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31) makes the TRICARE benefit consistent with civilian health plans. The change will largely affect those plans which have an enrollment fee and are currently billed by the fiscal year.

Mission and Installation Contracting Command exceeds small business goals for third consecutive year

Officials with the Mission and Installation Contracting Command Small Business Programs credit industry outreach efforts across the command as a vital tool in helping meeting the organization’s small business goals. In August, approximately 100 representatives from small and large industry took part in an acquisition forecast open house conducted by the MICC-Fort Sam Houston contracting office in San Antonio. With more than 60 businesses represented, those in attendance heard from leaders from the MICC headquarters and contracting office on the value of small business participation in helping improve market research and increase competition.
