Battling the invisible enemy: The rise in severe heat illness

While overall heat illness rates for service members saw a slight decrease in 2025, the most severe form, heat stroke, has increased for the second consecutive year. Defense Health Agency-Public Health experts report that service members under 20 and recruit trainees are at exceptionally high risk.
