JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas –
The much-needed reconstruction of Wilson Way is underway. As construction progresses on Wilson Way, safety remains our top priority.
It is asked that pedestrians and commuters please refrain from cutting across the construction zone, especially near the Commissary parking lot to Military Clothing Sales. Jumping barricades and cutting safety fences pose serious safety risks and disrupt construction efforts.
The impacts on traffic and the effectiveness of the detours continue to be monitored. One issue that has recently arisen is the occurrence of pedestrians jumping over the concrete barricades and even cutting the orange safety fence to cross from the Commissary parking lot to Military Clothing Sales. The contractor has mended the fence and Civil Engineers are working with 502nd Air Base Wing Safety to place additional barricades/signage up to prevent pedestrians from jumping into a construction area.
Safety is also working with dormitory leadership to brief the troops to stay out of the construction area, and asks for the installation's support to continue to reinforce the need to keep our personnel safe and out of the construction area.
The contractor has started removing the road and excavating base course, so the risk of personal injury will increase dramatically should someone try to jump across the barricades.
At the moment, there is no pedestrian access to Military Clothing Sales from the Commissary parking lot – rather, Military Clothing Sales is accessible via the attached detour.
The project will include connecting the sidewalk along Wilson Way from Garden Road to the Commissary, however this will not be complete and/or accessible until the completion of all phases.
