Hidden dangers
March 12, 2007
Rising water from the previous night's rain caused problems for one driver on Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on March 12. According to the Texas Governor's Division of Emergency Management, 6 inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. Additionally, water displaces 1,500 pounds of weight for every foot that it rises. It can take less than 2 feet of rushing water to carry off most passenger vehicles, including pick-up trucks and sports utility vehicles.

Drivers should avoid attempting to drive through flooded roadways. Water covering roads may be hiding washed-out bridges or gouged-out roadbeds. If a driver comes upon a covered road, back up instead of trying to turn around. (USAF photo by Alan Boedeker)

Misty Talley takes part in Read Across America Day by bringing "Nothing Wrong with a Three-Legged Dog" to life for fifth graders in Sandy Rodriguez's class at Sun Valley Elementary School, a mile south of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on Loop 410. Approximately 100 volunteers signed up to read to the students March 2, with members of Team Lackland representing nearly 80 percent of the volunteers, according to Kelli Wilson, the school's social worker and organizer of the event.
