By Raymond V. Whelan 37th Training Wing Public Affairs Office

The Lackland Lady Warhawks Varsity Softball Team smacked 32 hits as they won their second-straight game last week during San Antonio Parks and Recreation Spring League competition.

After the Warhawks downed Strange Attitude 18-10 through six innings April 26 at the Alva Jo Fischer Memorial Softball Complex, they raised their SAPAR record to 5-5.

"I think we're beginning to find our stride," said Megan Schafer, the Warhawks third baseman and assistant coach.

"There's still plenty of room for improvement," she said, "but each player is recognizing that and becoming better each time."

Lackland leaped to a 5-0 lead through the first inning. Pitcher Bobbi Russell led off the top of the first with a triple and scored the first Warhawk run on a single by left-center fielder Christy Hayes. Later, Hayes scored, as did left fielder Tina Cooper, shortstop Anastasia Sybille and Schafer.

Sybille, second baseman Melia Sherman and first baseman Catrina Harden put together a double play to help Strange Attitude stay off the scoreboard during the bottom of the first.

However, during their second at-bat, Strange Attitude batted around and came up with eight runs on six walks and two singles, and they went up 8-5 over Lackland.

Cooper singled and scored one run for the Warhawks during the third inning.

During the fourth, Strange Attitude scored one run to boost their lead to 9-6.

Lackland charged back with nine runs on 12 hits during the fifth. Center fielder Audra Britt, catcher Jackie Hudock, extra hitter Sylvia Webster, Cooper, Harden, Hayes, Russell, Schafer and Sherman each scored one run to give Lackland a 15-9 advantage that held up through the remainder of the game.

Right fielder Lyndsay Moen, Sherman and Webster each scored one run for Lackland during the sixth.

Strange Attitude scored once and fizzled out during the last of the sixth.

Almost every player in the Lackland lineup had two hits or more.

Hayes went 4-for-5 at the plate, and both Cooper and Sherman went 4-for-4. Sherman drove one run home. Both Harden and Hudock went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Hudock doubled. Also, Webster went 3-for-4. Britt, Schafer, Sybille, Moen and Russell each went 2-for-4. Britt doubled. Both Britt and Schafer had two RBIs, and Russell drove in one run.

Pinch hitter Nikki Chachere tripled during her lone appearance at the plate.

For Strange Attitude, left fielder Annette Berman went 2-for-2 with one RBI, two walks and three RBIs.
