STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Mississippi –
Lt. Cmdr. Jeremy Sexson, a native of San Antonio, Texas, is one of the sailors ensuring the U.S. Navy maintains freedom from the ocean to the stars at Navy Meteorology and Oceanography Command, or METOC.
Sexson currently serves at METOC, headquartered at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.
Sexson graduated from East Central High School in 1998 and joined the Navy 15 years ago.
“Meteorology is a passion of mine and I wanted to bring it into the Navy mission," Sexson said.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in San Antonio.
“I had a strong moral upbringing that has helped me maintain both character and integrity,” Sexson said. "My family also served in the Air Force, and those values have carried over into my naval service. The southern culture continues to be prominent in how I conduct myself in the Navy."
According to Navy officials, sailors and civilians working throughout Naval Oceanography collect, measure, and analyze the elements of the physical environment (land, sea, air, space). They synthesize a vast array of oceanographic and meteorological data to produce forecasts and warnings in support of safety of flight and navigation.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Sexson serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
Sexson has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“My proudest accomplishment is training and developing my sailors from the Strike Group Oceanography team in San Diego to complete a very successful deployment,” he said.
Sexson can take pride in serving America through military service.
“To me, being in the military means service to my country and service to the Navy,” Sexson added. “Maintaining freedom of the seas continues to help build my character and integrity.”
Sexson is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I would like to thank my parents, David Sexson and Claire Daves, and my cousin, Lenny Bartolic, for always being examples of good military service and for giving me a good upbringing,” he said.
Sexson has goals for their future in the Navy.
“My short-term goal is to be promoted to the rank of commander and complete a successful milestone tour,” Sexson said. "My long-term goal is to retire from the Navy and continue my service to the country."
