Sheriff R.E. Cycle visits JBSA libraries

By Crystal Mendez JBSA Qualified Recycling Program

Children participating in the Joint Base San Antonio Libraries summer reading programs had a lesson on recycling on base from Sheriff R.E. Cycle on June 13, 2024, at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston and JBSA-Lackland libraries.

Sheriff R.E. Cycle is the mascot for the JBSA Qualified Recycling Program and will be at the JBSA-Randolph Library at 10 a.m. on July 25, 2024.

The Sheriff made his rounds to these two libraries to educate kids about proper recycling etiquette and how to reduce contamination. More than 55 participants gathered to listen and learn, and then participated in the Q&A portion of the presentation.

Once parents and children alike were thoroughly educated on the “Do’s and Don’ts” of workplace recycling versus on-base housing recycling versus off-base recycling, they were rewarded with goodies from Sheriff R.E. Cycle.

Participants received a mini recycle bin pencil holder; a pencil made of recycled denim, cash, or tires; a sticker book provided by Take Care of Texas; a coloring book provided by the Army Corp of Engineers; and a sheriff’s badge.

The mission of the Joint Base San Antonio Qualified Recycling Program, or JBSA QRP, is to protect human health and the environment, conserve natural resources, and promote recycling, an essential part of the U.S. federal government’s overall environmental initiative to reduce the environmental impact of and amount of waste generated by the U.S. military services.

The QRP’s goal is to encourage the base populace to serve as responsible stewards of the environment, by diverting solid waste from the landfills through the implementation of waste minimization practices such as reducing, reusing, and recycling materials, in order to ensure a safe, healthy and sustainable nation for current and future generations.
