The Roger G. Cole High School Cougars varsity girls' and boys' cross country teams used grit and persistence at the University Interscholastic League Region IV Championships Oct. 25, advancing to the UIL state meet Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, Texas.

The boys' team were the regional runners up, conquering their longtime nemesis, Luling High School. Freshman Anthony Meyer was a fourth-place medalist overall, out of 160 runners. David Shisler, Matt Bustos, James Douglas, Drew Rendon, Elijah Charles and Parker Menck were not far behind.

The girls also turned in another amazing race. Freshman Finley Hunting was the regional runner up. The girls team finished in third place overall, along with Nadja Babilonia-Lopez, Audrey Velesky, Cami Castillo, and Rachel Frank running their best race of the season.
