JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas –
In recognition of National Police Week, Joint Base San Antonio security forces members took part in a weeklong remembrance May 13-17.
National Police Week is an annual event honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement members and pays special tribute to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
“It is with a great honor today that I am afforded the opportunity to speak at this retreat ceremony marking the end of a week to celebrate those who have sworn to keep the peace and uphold the laws and values which make our nation great,” said Col. Phillip Born, 37th Training Wing vice commander. “We celebrate the fact that we can sleep soundly in our beds each night. They are the bedrock behind our democracy. It thrives on the dedication of a few women and men every day.”
This year’s police week events included a “Battle of the Blue” obstacle course, military working dog competition, shooting competition and candlelight vigil.
“We owe a great deal of gratitude to the men and women of the thin blue line. We celebrate their service and we continue to celebrate their efforts,” Born said. “These men and women are dedicated to running towards the gunfire, towards the crying child, towards the wreckage of a terrorist incident to restore order, bring calm to chaos and ultimately bring those who are responsible to justice.”
National Police Week dates back to 1962, when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. That same year, Congress established by joint resolution the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.
