Soldiers participate in ‘spiritual PT’

5th Recruiting Brigade Public Affairs

The 5th Recruiting Brigade’s Unit Ministry Team at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston hosted “spiritual physical training” during the early hours of Oct. 28.

Soldiers from Headquarters 5th Recruiting Brigade, San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, East and West Companies of the San Antonio Recruiting Battalion and Soldiers from the JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Warrior Transition Battalion, or WTB, met to perform physical training based on the Army values.

Chaplain (Capt.) Francis Oforka welcomed the Soldiers and explained the circuit of using the Army values for each exercise. The stations and exercises were broken down as: Loyalty: V-Up; duty: leg tuck and twist; respect: mountain climber; selfless service: half jack; honor: single-leg push-up; integrity: power jump; and personal courage: shuttle run.

After going through the circuit, Sgt. David Lindsey led the group in cool-down stretches.  Once the Soldiers had stretched and cooled down, they gathered in a circle to listen to several speakers who talked briefly on their favorite Army value.

Col. Terance Huston, 5th Recruiting Brigade commander, spoke to the Soldiers about two of his favorite values: selfless service and personal courage. Brigade Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen Badley spoke on loyalty and respect.

Staff Sgt. Tiffany Rodriguez from the Warrior Transition Battalion spoke on duty, as she explained how she wound up at the WTB.

Rodriguez was hit in 2014 by a pickup truck walking across the street to the gym at Fort Hood, Texas.  After her stay at the hospital there, she came to the WTB to finish her physical therapy and expressed her desire to the staff at the WTB to stay on active duty.

As she improved, she began to participate in different sports such as archery, wheelchair racing and cycling by pedaling with her hands. She recently received word that she will be able to stay on active duty and is awaiting an assignment.

Rodriguez explained the reason duty is so important to her is because her therapist did her duty to continually push Rodriguez and she feels it is her duty to inspire and help others not to give up when they are going through bad moments in their life.

Lt. Col. Kevin Bouren, San Antonio Recruiting Battalion commander, closed the event with remarks about his favorite value, honor, saying it’s essential to the total wellbeing of a Soldier to be spiritually fit and by conducting themselves with excellence to bring honor to themselves and their units.
