AFRC geared up to promote financial fitness

By Mike Joseph JBSA-Lackland Public Affairs

Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland service members, government civilians, retirees and their families can get the opportunity to assess their fiscal fitness during the Military Saves campaign, which begins Feb. 19 and runs through March 2.

The Airman and Family Readiness Center has partnered with the Better Business Bureau of San Antonio to oversee a series of Military Saves classes, open to all JBSA and Department of Defense civilians. All classes are in the AFRC, Bldg. 1249.

Military Saves is a joint Department of Defense and Consumer Federation of America campaign focused on promoting healthy financial habits for Airmen and family members by stressing the importance of saving to reach financial and personal goals.

To that end, the AFRC is promoting a variety of financial services to participants.

"We've made credit score reviews available during the campaign," said Sharon Witter, AFRC chief. "Those reviews are conducted by the AFRC staff and by appointment only.

"We'll also have Military Life consultants, who are financial experts, at the center for additional support," she added. "They will be available before or after any of the classes, and on a walk-in basis."

"The Military Saves campaign sets aside a specific time to let our customers say, 'This week I'm going to focus on all aspects of my finances,'" Witter said.

JBSA youth are also included in the campaign. The BBB will teach a special financial class for youth ages 9 through 12 at the Lackland Youth Center Wednesday.

The class schedule includes:

Credit score reviews, Tuesday through March 2, by appointment only. Financial readiness subject matter experts will educate customers on how to read their credit report, and discuss strategy to improve their score.
