In 1889, Charles Young became the third African American to graduate and receive a commission as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1889 -- the last to do so until Benjamin O. Davis Jr. in 1936, and the first to advance to the rank of colonel in the regular Army.
