Joint Base San Antonio doing its part to reduce ozone levels
May 19, 2017 — Starting in October, Bexar County will likely be designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, as a “non-attainment” county for ozone levels. This means that an average value of ozone levels detected by monitoring stations around San Antonio has surpassed the regulatory limit imposed by the EPA, and region-wide action is needed to lower it. ... Ozone – while necessary and helpful at higher altitudes to block harmful ultraviolet rays – is harmful to human, animal, and vegetation health at the ground level. It is also one of the main causes of smog.
