Lt. Gen. Laura J. Richardson takes command of U.S. Army North

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Laura J. Richardson, incoming U.S. Army North commander, accepts the Army North (Fifth Army) colors from U.S. Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy, commanding general, U.S. Northern Command, during the change of command ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston July 8. Richardson most recently served at U.S. Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where she was the deputy commanding general.

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, U.S. Army North commanding general, hosts personnel from federal, state, U.S. Territories and military agencies at the 2019 ARNORTH Hurricane Rehearsal of Concept Drill at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston June 12. The ROC Drill helped synchronize active duty military support efforts with federal, state, territorial and local partners to ensure seamless support in a hurricane response event.

JBSA-Fort Sam Houston leaders host second family housing town hall

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan (center), U.S. Army North commander and senior Army commander for Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, as well as other JBSA-Fort Sam Houston and Lincoln Military Housing leaders, addressed additional housing concerns at the second Army Family Housing Town Hall. This town hall provided an update for housing residents and new steps residents can utilize to help with issues in the future.

The town hall was a platform for Soldiers and family members to provide information and gain feedback as part of an ongoing U.S. Army-wide effort to resolve unsatisfactory conditions in Army family housing.

Jeffrey Buchanan, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) commanding general, briefs newly arrived Soldiers from 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo., and Fort Knox at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Oct. 31. The Soldiers are in Texas in support of Operation Faithful Patriot, which is a Department of Defense operation in support of the Department of Homeland Security and, Customs and Border Patrol in order to provide national security at the nation’s southern border.

Military aids disaster response effort in aftermath of Hurricane Florence

Soldiers with the 74th Composite Truck Company, 129th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division rest at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Sept. 22, 2018. The soldiers have been conducting high-water rescue and relief operations in Lumberton, North Carolina. The soldiers deployed from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to assist with the response to Hurricane Florence.

JBSA hosts Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Summit

Army Emergency Relief campaign kicks off March 2

The Army Emergency Relief mission it is to provide financial assistance to Army Soldiers in times of valid emergency need.  Last year, AER provided JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Soldiers and their families with more that $1 million in assistance ($1,006,972.32), a 54 percent increase locally.

Army Emergency Relief campaign kicks off
March 2, 2017
Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commander, U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) spoke on the importance of Army Emergency Relief, or AER, during the campaign kickoff event at the Fort Sam Houston Theater March 1. AER is the Army's own emergency financial assistance organization and is dedicated to “Helping the Army Take Care of its Own.” AER financial assistance is conducted within the Army structure by mission commanders and garrison commanders through AER Sections located at U.S. Army installations worldwide. The general referenced several cases where AER assisted Soldiers with financial needs. Of all the Army values, he said contributing to AER to help out fellow Soldiers is the most selfless service act anyone can do and also highlighted the importance for every Soldier to know about AER and the services they provide. In addition, this year marks the 75th anniversary of AER, a program of Soldiers helping Soldiers since 1942.
