METC staff member honored as distinguished Toastmaster

Lt. Col. Joy Schmalzle, program director for the ophthalmic technician program at the Medical Education and Training Campus at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, was the recipient of the Distinguished Toastmaster award Jan.3. Schmalzle joins less than one percent of the 345,000 Toastmaster members worldwide who share this prestigious title.

Fallen sailor’s memory lives on through annual toy drive

Students load toys into a truck outside of Anderson Hall at the Medical Education and Training Campus, or METC, at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, wrapping up METC's fifth annual toy drive. Anderson Hall was named after Petty Officer 3rd Class Christopher Anderson who was killed in action Dec. 4, 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines. Every year, Sailors at METC organize a toy drive in Anderson's honor to collect donations for Toys for Tots.

Combat medic instructor remembered with METC classroom dedication

Joseph “JB” Slye, an emergency medical technician, or EMT, instructor at the Department of Combat Medic Training and retired volunteer firefighter for the Medina (Ohio) Fire Department, passed away Sept. 1. His EMT classroom was dedicated with his name Sept. 29.
