The Department of Defense budgets about $25 billion annually to operate and support its installations, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Years ago, the GAO determined the DOD needed to reduce its installation support costs, and the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 helped bring their efforts to fruition by authorizing military services to enter into Intergovernmental Support Agreements, or IGSAs, with local and state governments, leveraging financial benefits and enhancing mission effectiveness.

The training consisted of a presentation where attendees learned the “ABCs of Bleeding Control” along with some hands-on practice in applying tourniquets, packing wounds and applying direct pressure to stop bleeding.

Joint Base San Antonio, City of San Antonio enter into mutual aid agreement for emergency response

Joint Base San Antonio and the City of San Antonio have entered into a nine-year mutual aid and support agreement that will allow for more efficient response and recovery actions during emergencies. Brig. Gen. Laura L. Lenderman, 502d Air Base Wing and JBSA commander, along with San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood, San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus, Deputy City Manager Erik Walsh and other city officials, were on hand for the signing of the agreement at San Antonio City Hall Nov. 29. Gen. Lenderman and Chief Hood were the signatories for the document.

City and Joint Base San Antonio partner to pave way for Salado Creek Trail and Equestrian Facilities at Fort Sam Houston

The Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System, which includes Salado Creek, is an expanding system of paved multi-use trails funded with sales tax funds approved by San Antonio voters. The Salado Creek Greenway, recently designated a “National Recreation Trail” by the Department of the Interior, is currently divided into two long segments north and south of JBSA-Fort Sam Houston that will soon be connected into one, very long continuous trail, thanks to the partnership between the City of San Antonio, or CoSA, and JBSA.

City of San Antonio Mayor-Elect Ron Nirenberg and others pose with the newly revealed official logo for "Military City USA" during a ceremony at City Hall June 19. “For years many have referred to San Antonio as Military City, USA and now we are officially a registered trademark, a name that no other city can claim.  Our relationship with the military is one of the many reasons our city continues to prosper and we are proud to celebrate this historic announcement,” Nirenberg said. “Thank you to the entire military community, their families, and the service men and women who call San Antonio home.”
