Special Warfare Airman receives Silver Star for heroism in Afghanistan

Lt. Gen. Bradd Webb, incoming commander for Air Education and Training Command, presents the Silver Star to Tech. Sgt. Michael Perolio from the Special Warfare Training Wing during a ceremony at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland’s Gateway Club July 18. Perolio was presented the Silver Star in connection to military operations against an armed enemy in Afghanistan Jan. 11, 2018, during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.
Vietnam-era Army medic sees son promoted; receives Silver Star

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commanding general of U.S. Army North (Fifth Army), pins the Silver Star on Edward Iannuccilli during a ceremony July 7 at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. The Silver Star had been awarded to then-Spec. 4 Iannuccilli but never presented. Iannuccilli, a combat medic in Vietnam, survived a medical evacuation crash April 7, 1970, then, disregarding the flames and exploding ammunition inside the helicopter, made several attempts before successfully rescuing the pilot. The pilot, and several other members of his unit, 159th Medical Evacuation Company, or Dustoff, attended the award ceremony, which coincided with Iannuccilli’s son, Michael, being promoted to lieutenant colonel.
