Historic tours: Army history in San Antonio transcends Alamo
May 10, 2018 — Present-day San Antonio, also known as “Military City USA,” traces its history back 300 years with the founding of Presido de San Antonio May 5, 1718. To commemorate the bond between city and the military, Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston hosted Military Appreciation Weekend May 5-6 as part of the city’s tricentennial celebration. Michael Henderson and his wife, Connie, receive a guided tour of the historic 129-year old Stilwell House at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston May 5 as part of Military Appreciation Weekend. Located at 626 Infantry Post Road, the house is named after Brig. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, also known as “Vinegar Joe.” This historic house was one of the many stops during the hourly historic tour of the installation.

Military Appreciation Weekend at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston is planned for May 5-6, and will feature live music, rides, arts and crafts, military demonstration teams, historic tours and a polo match. The weekend will open with a 5K race on Saturday and conclude with a live music concert and fireworks on Sunday.
