JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas –
The Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Fitness and Sports Department continues to pump up the annual Lackland Bodybuilding Classic Figure and Fitness Championships scheduled for Nov. 17.
The National Physique Committee, or NPC, is sponsoring the 42st annual event held at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown San Antonio for the second consecutive year.
The Classic was held on JBSA-Lackland the previous 39 years.
Prejudging opens at 9 a.m. and the finals begin at 6:30 p.m.
Presenting the show off base allows for more community involvement, said Willie Mastin, Classic’s assistant director who competed in the inaugural show in 1975.
“At the time we had 12 competitors and a basketball court full of spectators,” he said. “The show has grown because now we have up to 300 competitors and between 2,000 to 3,000 spectators. We have geared this event toward the military, but now we are inviting all of San Antonio and Texas to be a part of it.”
The Classic will showcase competitors in five categories – bodybuilding, fitness, physique, figure and bikini. Each category will feature an open and novice competition, a teen competition for ages 16-19 and a masters contest for ages 35-44 and 45 and up. Only the men’s bodybuilding masters competition will be broken down into four categories: ages 35-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and up.
Entry fee is $85 per category and $65 per category for military service members.
Competitors can go to https://www.myjbsa-fss-mwr.com/nm/templates/?a=15 to download their registration form and e-mail it to Karla Morales, JBSA- Lackland Fitness and Sports employee, at the address stated at the bottom of the form. They can also submit the form to the Fitness and Sports Office, located at 1951 Biggs Ave., building 2513 across from the Warhawk Fitness Center, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The deadline to submit signed and completed entry forms is Nov. 4. A $50 late fee will be administered after that date and no refunds will be granted.
Spectators can purchase tickets at the JBSA-Lackland Fitness and Sports Office or by phone at 671-0854 and 671-2725 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Tickets for the prejudging event are $20 and $40 for the finals. VIP tickets for seating in the first five rows are also offered at $80.
“This is one of the best shows in San Antonio because of how it’s run,” Mastin said. “It’s the best chance for competitors to qualify for their NPC card and the atmosphere is great.”
