EFMP campers take on the arts

Military & Family Readiness Center

After a week of instruction, Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Exceptional Family Member Program campers ranging in ages 4-14 highlighted their new skills in theatre, choreography and fine arts at the Dodd Field Chapel July 15.

The Very Special Art Start with the Arts program is held in partnership with the JBSA EFMP offering a free camp for JBSA EFMP families at each location. The camp engages and inspires children through the arts, including those with disabilities and diverse learning styles by combining fun activities in music, dance and movement, drama, and visual art.

“The camp is not only a great opportunity for the children but also the parents and caregivers. While in camp, parents and caregivers get a planned short-term break and an opportunity to run errands, focus on themselves, or their other children and spouse,” said Grace Martinez, EFMP work life specialist.

EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that works with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support and personnel services to families with special needs.

An EFM is a service member’s immediate family member, regardless of age, with any physical, emotional, developmental, behavioral, mental or intellectual disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training or counseling on an on-going basis. Disabilities may range from mild, moderate to severe. For more information, call the Military & Family Readiness Center at 221-2705.
